In Darkness,
We See Stars

‘In Darkness, We See Stars,’ is the first fantasy novel in a trilogy, complete at 87,000 words. It is narrated by a clever, no-shits-given, bronze-skinned girl who uncovers the dark side of her broken family, a forbidden power to imprint with magical creatures, and a colonial war she cannot outrun. The book will appeal to young adult readers at the cross section of ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ and ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.’

Eighteen years old and impoverished, Kaira Iniskaya yearns for answers about her identity after being abandoned by her mother as an infant and denied the truth from her tormented father. But just as Kaira suspects a bizarre magic radiating from her fingertips, she is conscripted to the Koval militia which claims to scout uncharted lands across Avonya.

Kaira yearns to return to her father and homeland, but must instead navigate a brutal training program in which most recruits are killed. She encounters a labyrinth of characters — perplexing instructors, desperate peers, and cryptic Koval officer Edan Krauss — who may be worthy of her trust or steer her to her death. She soon discovers the Koval’s true mission is to colonize the Earth once again, and how her long-lost mother, now a top fugitive of the Koval, is entangled in it. Kaira must conceal who she is and the new elemental powers that tie her to a hidden race, in order to survive, return to Baba, and make everything right.

But upon her escape, Kaira finds her village in shambles, the neighboring volcano erupted, and her father enslaved. The Koval are harnessing elemental creatures as weapons and plan to attack Avonya’s capitol next. With her rare powers growing more powerful day by day, Kaira is compelled to decide what role she will play in the Koval’s looming war against everyone she’s ever loved.
